Not the Perfect Vaccum, but Close!, April 23, 2011

My reason for buying in a new vacuum was because my old Hoover “HEPA” style vacuum was just that – old. I have an attached greenhouse to my house. In the evening when the sun shined through the windows, all the dust and dirt would show easily on the wood floors. At the next day, I would vacuum, but the dust/dirt seemed to “staticky” to pick up off the floor. So I would vacuum, then resort to getting the swifter out.

And just like any other reviewers, I felt like I needed to put the Dyson DC28 to the test after receiving it. I vacuumed everything ( 99% wood floors, some area carpets) with the old vacuum, then the Dyson. And once again, just like everyone else who has tried this, I was really amazed and somewhat grossed out by how much filth was still left for the Dyson to pick up. Also, I didn’t need to follow my cleaning regimen with a wipe off with a swifter.

What makes me really impressed with the Dyson DC28 is about its performance over any other vacuum i had before. And so far, there were only two areas I wasn’t totally satisfied, and one personal preference issue. For starters, one of the things that attracted me to this was the so called “lay flat” attachment. When cleaning, I would always have to resort to the swifter to get under the couch, entertainment system, bed, etc. Even my regular “shop vac” style vacuum hose was too thick to really get under these furnishings. Lay flat, right? Well, not really. I guess I have a different definition of flat compared to Dyson. The lay flat attachment, in flattest position, is still probably at a 20 degree plus angle. It can get a little bit under the couches and such, but not far at all.

Good cleaning to get the dust/dirt under these will still require me to move the furniture, or get out the swifter to clean underneath. My other (slight) complaint is the hose for extending to clean things such as blinds, furniture, etc. It says it extends for 17 feet or so. It does. When I bought the Dyson DC28 I wondered how that worked – if the hose recoiled, or what. Well it’s hose stretches out, then stretches back into normal shape. Stretching it out to clean was not the most fluid action though. The coils try to resist stretching. Perhaps over time this will “soften” up. My last personal preference issue is just which Dyson vacuum I chose. I almost chose one of the roller ball models. I wish I did pick one now. I still have to resort to picking the vacuum up to get into some small areas and such. It would have been nice to see how well that roller ball functionality worked.

So besides a little frustration with the so called “lay flat” attachment and having to battle the vacuum host to extend, I am impressed. I would definitely recommend the DC28 Animal to anyone thinking about getting one – but you might want to try one of the roller ball models.

Did I really need to spend the money?, April 12, 2011

I purchased the Dyson DC28 in back in the February 2011. At home, I have a long haired car who is constantly shedding all over the place, topped off with severe allergies to pollen.

I bought this Dyson at the first to deal with my pet hair, but it had give me with another added bonus (which, I think is better than the amount of hair it picks up). I live in Northern Florida, so my windows are open most of the year (letting the pollen in, etc). I clean very regularly, and vacuum at least once a week. Almost all of the reviews talk about how much dirt and hair came up when they first vacuumed. I had a similar experience, however I felt that a few more swipes with the old vacuum would have done the same thing (but, that point is moot).

At last, I found where the major game changing difference, it was in the contents of the dust bin, not the volume. The Dyson DC28 sucked up this very fine dirt. Until now, I had not seen that in the previous vacuums I have owned. Yes indeed, It did a great job at getting the cat hair. The best part is, I notice a huge change in how much my allergies decrease between vacuuming. The HEPA filter is amazing. If for no other reason, and if you are an allergy sufferer, I would recommend this Dyson. Don’t misunderstand, all the other features and attachments are amazing, and I use them all but, I was most blown away by it’s ability to make breathing easier for me. Another unexpected surprise was how much quieter the Dyson was compared to my previous vacuums.

To sum it all, The Dyson DC28 was my great purchase. The only thing I do not like about it, the vacuum is not self propelled. It is a heavy vacuum and, for the money, it should be self propelled which is why I only gave 4 stars. Glad I spent the money.
